And Stay Within It.
Fallow Rest is a term I like to attune to when I know I need to rest, restore and replenish my energy. As a witch I rely on my spiritual practices to support my growth and my healing. Fallowing for me is a practice that creates the magical matrix capable of holding space for and cultivating both of these essential experiences for my being.
Here I offer 6 Ways for witches to enter into Fallow Rest that also support us to stay in this period of time while the necessary process unfolds.
Anchor.
Becoming Fallow as a spiritual practice, refers to the process of letting the earth become fallow, initiating a period of inactivity within a growth cycle as is practiced in agriculture in letting fields rest after a harvest for one of more growth cycles. Within a spiritual practice this can sound like we are entering into a period of physical, mental or emotional inactivity. Which in essence is true however does not mean that nothing is happening within us. Because while we are in sacred Fallow Rest we will have chosen to disengage from active growth in areas of our life, yet there is also much happening beneath our surface. During our Fallowing Rest stuff will come up to the surface, some of this will be useful for us for when we step our of fallowing rest, yet some will be disruptive, but all will try to activate us to become responsive, to react or to reengage. An anchor will be our intention of what we would like when our fallow period ends. Something we would like to embody or experience or feel like. This will likely be related to the event that activated our fallow rest. An anchor can be a simple word that represents our subtle goal. I say subtle because this goal is not an active pursuit, its a dream if you will, and should not be merged with or held too tightly. It is a gentle 'wouldn't it be nice if...' dream of how we hope to grow in the future if we allow ourselves this sacred time of rest.
Surrender.
Surrendering to the sensuous flow of the unfolding of our natural being during our fallowing period. This involves a choice being made by us to accept that we do need this time for ourselves and we determine that this is the most important focus for us at this time. We are looking for a feeling of embracing and committing to the process of unfolding and seeing it through to the end. If we don't accept that we need this period of deep rest and honour ourselves in the journey of it, we risk being distracted or influenced to leave the fallowing space before we have gained any benefit from it.
Be Cosy.
Fallowing is all about cosy time for us. Creating an atmosphere conducive to rest and nourishment is important during the fallow rest period. Feeling cosy can mean different things to each of us, so it is important to know what works for us personally. Does it look like relaxing in the garden drinking a nice cup of tea, or going for gentle walks. It is snuggling up with our beloved cat or dog family member or enjoying a relaxing book or some soothing music. Is it creating an ambiance that settles our mind and restores our senses. It can be anything that allows us to decompress and lay fallow in with a sense of self care, security and tenderness. Being cosy supports us to remain in our fallow rest for the period of time that we have allocated for ourselves, be it a day, a week or longer.
Be Present.
Being present is important during sacred fallowing time. This speaks to us of being grounded and aware, and not of being distant or disassociated with our usual life. We need to remain present in the here and now, living in time, with a curious nature. Gently observing the usual goings on of our daily life yet not being reactive to things that we really can let go of for a while. Often we will be engaged in family, friendship or community animated connections. A family member may want to off-load there day to us, a friend may need support, again, or our community, local or social media related may draw our attention to them, and with it the minimal energy we have left. It is important to be assertive and say 'I need some time to myself', 'I need to rest', or 'I'm in sacred space', my personal favourite. Being present allows us to live in time, exist in an alive time space, noticing in felt sensing ways, yet understanding that we don't have to be on and ready to react.
Resist.
Resisting the mysterious hidden processes, alive and moving beneath the surface of our psyche, with the power to re-activate us and draw us out of our fallowing period. Much can come to the surface. Some useful and some not so much. Fallowing by nature has a disruptive quality. Fallowing in fields benefits the earth by disrupting the life cycle of pests and diseases of plants. Fallowing as a spiritual practice can likewise disrupt ways of being, feeling and acting that will have been hindering our growth. Ways of being like Intrusive thoughts, negative self talk, cyclic emotional disturbances and anything that can affect our sense of balance and harmony in our lives. It is important to notice anything like this that comes up for us, thank our body for sharing this with us and let it go. It is important to not react. An on the contrary, creating fallow earth within us can also attract a lot of good to surface for us like inspiration, creativity and joy. We may also experience flowing energy which feels good and we may suddenly want to act on it. It is important to again, notice all that comes up, thank our body for sharing and let it be free to be alive around us.
Journal.
Journaling, or taking some notes during our fallowing period is important for our self awareness and for knowing ourselves and how we experience our daily lives within the deeper levels of our being and how we respond to Fallowing Rest periods. Taking some notes especially on points 5 and 6 will benefit us in the long run in understanding our daily activity and what, when or who is depleting our energy and what is active within us on a deeper subconscious level affecting our daily lives. It is important not to merge with journaling, but to take brief notes that we can refer back to after we emerge from our fallow rest and then can explore in more depth.
Orienting ourselves into a fallowing period and navigating our sacred Fallow Rest with these 6 sign posts will support us in journeying through this time with awareness, self care and grace. Allowing us to get the most from this important and necessary healing time we gift ourselves.
